From the Lathe to Production Control – Practical Experience and In-house Expertise

Muottituote manufactures moulds and injection moulded components using modern, high‑precision machinery operated by skilled professionals. Careful quality monitoring, combined with strong expertise and experience in machine operation, ensures consistent high quality across all products. In this article series, we introduce the professionals behind our various operations.

Tommi Miettinen, the Production Manager for mould manufacturing at Muottituote’s Rauma factory, manages a wide range of responsibilities. His workdays consist of tasks such as cost estimation, project scheduling, and supervising manufacturing processes. The goal is to ensure that every mould meets the high quality standards for which Muottituote is known.

“I spend a lot of time at my workstation, but it’s equally important to be present on the shop floor. We have decades of experience and skilled professionals here, and continuous interaction with them is key. Together, we brainstorm how to develop our daily operations to be even better and more efficient,” Miettinen describes.

“In a leadership role, I find it particularly important to be easily approachable at all times.”

Over 25 years of practical experience in production and design is an invaluable advantage in his current role.

“I know the production environment down to the smallest detail. I can put myself in the shoes of the makers and understand the specifics that must be considered regarding manufacturability and schedules.”

Miettinen is familiar with every stage of production, having worked as a manual lathe operator, in machining, and as a designer over the decades. He emphasizes the importance of continuous interaction with production staff.

Study Plans Replaced by a Career in Design

Miettinen has worked at Muottituote for his entire adult life. He joined the company immediately after graduating from vocational school in June 1999. He started on a manual lathe, and over the following five years, he worked in machining, assembly, and CAD programming.

“In 2004, I was already planning to pursue further studies, but our CEO, Jukka Nurmi, suggested that we make a designer out of me instead. The studies were set aside, and I began learning mould design under the guidance of our then-Chief Designer, Tapio Ketola,” Miettinen recalls.

“In the future, the emphasis will be on continuous development—both in terms of equipment and facility investments and the work itself through a skilled workforce and training.”

From 2023 to 2025, Miettinen worked as a team leader and started his current position as production manager in November 2025. During his quarter-century with the company, Miettinen has witnessed immense development and growth.

“Major milestones for growth have included the Rauma factory’s move to its current premises, the integration of the Korpilahti plant, and, of course, the Joensuu factory, which brought along our current scale of injection moulding operations.”

Tommi Miettinen has worked at Muottituote for 27 years. He has witnessed the company’s growth firsthand and has been an integral part of its development.

An Integral Part of the Family Companys Story

A 27-year career with the same employer is a clear sign of job satisfaction. Miettinen’s passion has remained strong because his job description has evolved over the years.

“Design work has been close to my heart from the very beginning. You get to learn something new constantly and develop your skills. Over the years, design software has evolved in many ways,” he says.

“Together, we brainstorm how to develop our daily operations.”

“It is a privilege to have been part of this family company’s growth and development. I remember well Jukka’s vision from years ago about raising turnover to five million euros. Today, that figure is over 16 million, which proves we have done the right things and the direction for the future is clear.”
